I am providing this pattern for free because I know it is an awesome way for Moms and Dads to get a great carrier for next to nothing. I am also aware that this free pattern will be used by Moms that need a good carrier, but can't afford one. In this case, please use this pattern for free. However, if you can afford to donate for the use of the pattern, please do so in order to help keep this free for others. Please print off a page of business cards and keep them in the back pocket of the blue jeans so you can tell others where to get this pattern! Thanks!

Scissors, Needle and Thread, 1"Strapping- 6ft, Old Pair of Denim Jeans
Optional: Sewing Machine, Pins, Plastic Buckle for Strapping |
For starters, you'll want to choose a pair of blue jeans. I use my husbands jeans because they are a little wider and aren't made of stretchy fabric. Now, take the jeans and lay them out on a table. Cut off the bottom hem of the pants. Then cut up one leg along the back of the seam, or the front of it if you don't have a sewing machine. Essentially what we are doing is cutting off the thick seam that jeans have from the manufacturer, but those without a machine will have to leave it on so the fabric doesn't fray apart. Cut all the way up, right through the top of the pants. In the first steps we are separting the front and back halves of the jeans. Cut along the seam on the other leg, then do the inseam (the inner leg) in the same fashion. You now have the front of the jeans and the back of the jeans. Tthe back has no seam if you have a sewing machine, or it has a seam if you have no sewing machine. |
| Those with a sewing machine will now zig-zag stitch all along the raw edges of the backside of the jeans. I start on one of the outside edges, go down the leg, across the bottom, up the inner leg, across the crotch area, etc. |
| Now lay aside the backside of the denim. Take the front side and cut off the seams if they are still on. Then cut along the inside of the jeans as far up as you can go. We are making strips of denim, as long and as wide as you can go. Take these strips of denim and fold them in half. Sew the strips like this, so now you will have a strip approximatly 3" wide. Those without a sewing machine, this step needs to be hand-sewn! |
| Take your 3" strips of fabric and sew them onto the backside of the denim, at the top of the pockets, on the inside of the fabric. You'll want to pick a spot that has no seams or belt loops to go over. Usually, this is on the top of the back pockets, but it will vary between blue jeans. You can see in the pictures I've marked this spot with an "X". This portion will hold a lot of the toddler's weight, so make sure that this is sewed on properly. You can sew in a square and then cross it with an x, or else you can zig-zag through the whole arean until it is covered. If you're using a needle and thread, I found if I doubled up the thread, it was a lot stronger. |

| Take the 1" Strapping and cut it into two 3ft lengths. Place them at the loose end of the denim straps you just sewed on. Put the strapping in the center of the denim strap and sew them together. This is also a load-bearing portion, so make sure that it is sewn on well. Also, sew a line or two on the other end of the strapping so that it doesn't fray and come apart. You can add the plastic buckle here if you want one. Once you wear it a few times and figure out where baby sits, you can narrow the legs some and attach a larger buckle there if you don't like the knot. Some people have also told me they narrow the legs and use these strips in place of the strapping! |

| Put baby on your back, with the denim pants seat centered over his bum and back. Put the straps beside his shoulders. Take the legs of the pants and pull them under baby's legs so that they are between your sides and the baby's legs. Tie the two legs together in your front, but not too low or baby will ride really low. This knot is important to do like this: Left over right and under, right over left and under. If this knot is done incorrectly, it will dig into your stomach! |
| Take the shoulder straps and pull them straight down toward your hips. Now cross the straps behind your back and pull them under baby's legs toward your front. Do some light jumping here to make sure baby is tight before you tie this knot. If baby is too loose, he seems heavier! Tie this knot the same way you did the last one: Left over right and under, right over left and under. Baby should be tight and secure and ready to go! |
